Used RV Market: Price Plunge and Survival Challenges
【Market Status Quo: Increased Volume, Decreased Prices, and Inventory Issues】
In the first half of 2025, the transaction volume of used cars reached 9.5701 million units (YoY +1.99%), but the average price fell from 61,180 yuan to 53,670 yuan (a decrease of 12.3%). Both gasoline vehicles (50,918 yuan) and new energy vehicles (71,548 yuan) saw year-on-year declines exceeding 12%. The RV market saw sales of 2,137 units in the first quarter (YoY 20.49%), but only 334 units in February (Month-on-Month 66.4%), with inventory shrinking by 20%. A typical example is the Maxus V90, acquired for 158,000 yuan, sold for 178,800 yuan, resulting in a profit of only 12,000 yuan.
【Model Inventory and Circulation Obstruction】 Showrooms are stockpiling Maxus V90s and other RVs from various brands. Dealers are lowering prices to clear inventory, but the market is not responding favorably. The root cause is obstructed circulation: There are few professional RV campsites, and they are expensive, often forcing RVs out of regular parking lots; Class C RVs are large, and there are no suitable parking spaces in large cities, while potential buyers in small and medium-sized cities find them too expensive, creating a vicious cycle of being stuck in one market and the other.
【Core of Depreciation: User Pain Points and Product Adaptability】 The main reasons for depreciation include: Few professional campsites and the large size of Class C RVs; New energy vehicles (such as the Kaiyue Shanhai V90 PHEV) have a 40% reduction in range at -10℃, and maintenance costs are 2.3 times that of gasoline vehicles, resulting in a residual value of 230,000 yuan (more than 50% lower than the original price of 488,000 yuan); Impractical models (such as the Kia luxury campervan) have high failure rates of smart devices and poor off-road capability, resulting in a residual value of less than 300,000 yuan; Pseudo-high-end commercial vehicles (such as the Toyota Hiace 6-seater) have fuel consumption of 15L/100km, poor seat support, and smart system malfunctions, resulting in no takers even at a listed price of 180,000 yuan.
[Demand Diversion Through Alternative Products] The rise of vanlife campervans, with their affordable prices (far lower than Class C motorhomes), flexible and compact design (similar to MPVs/light commercial vehicles), ease of driving and fuel efficiency, and practical functionality (meeting basic cooking and sleeping needs), has led to increased usage and better suits the national conditions.
